Okinawa’s challenge for new ocean industries and the development of two kinds of underwater wireless communication systems

▶ Abstract
Okinawa prefecture consists of more than 100 islands and possesses larger ocean area than Kyusyu Island. Since seabed hydrothermal deposits and oil fields were discovered in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around Okinawa, trials of effective utilization on the marine resources has been started as a new industry. In this speech, recent Okinawa’s trial for the marine resource developments and marine IT related challenges will be disclosed. To contribute the new industries, two kinds of underwater acoustic communication system has been developed using OFDM technology with heavy signal processing. The one is to transmit higher definition image or movie data packet from deep see AUV etc. to water surface ship, targeting deep sea exploring. To realize a stable data communication with moving environment, new time domain Doppler compensation is applied. And the other is underwater small area acoustic network (USAAN) System to transmit control data, higher definition image or movie data packet inside 100 m diameter small underwater area like Radio wireless LTE system. It uses Time Domain Duplex (TDD) technology to realize Up link and Down link two-way communication. To realizes robust synchronization, Chirp preamble synchronization is applied. For both systems, developed system H/W’s and measured experimental results will be disclosed.

Tomohisa Wada was born in Hiroshima, Japan, on December 2, 1959. He received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, in 1983, the M.S.E.E. degree from Stanford University, Stanford CA, in 1992, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from Osaka University in 1994. From 1983 to 1999, he has been engaged in the development of CMOS/BiCMOS static RAM’s, a 3-D graphics controller ASIC, a flash memory, a low-voltage static RAM, and synchronous burst static RAM’s in . In 1999, he became an Associate Professor with the Department of Information Engineering, the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. Since 2001, he has been a Professor at the Department of Information Engineering, the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. In 2001, He was the founding member of Magna Design Net, Inc., which is communication system design Company using heavy digital signal processing such as OFDM. Currently, he is also the chief scientist of Magna Design Net, Inc. From 1999 to now, he has been engaged in the research and development of high band-width communication systems such as a terrestrial video broadcasting, a wireless LAN and WiMAX and so on. Current his research interests include radio for air communication systems and acoustic and optical for underwater communication systems.
